If action is not taken early the pain can rapidly spread into your forearm, wrist and fingers. The symptoms are - Pain and tenderness, Stiffness, Weakness, Numbness and Tingling. Applying pressure to inflammation/swelling is not a good idea and can cause more harm than good.
