One big risk of type 1 diabetes is the possible occurence of a diabetic coma, which is caused by both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. People with type 1 diabetes must be constantly prepared for potential hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycaemic (high blood sugar) reactions, which can both be life threatening.
